Current research Professor Simon Gandevia of the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute noted that in regard to the latest developments in research, there are always small developments but we do not see the major developments so often. “However there is important ongoing work across a range of fronts: from the cells that might be used to repair or aid recovery to the rehabilitation strategies that might improve function. The recent programs announced by the Office for Science and Medical Research in NSW give some insight into approaches being undertaken here. I am involved in one of those programs with collaborators from the NSW spinal units and the University of Technology, University of Sydney, University of New South Wales and Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute,” he said. This project is exploring the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES) to help with coughing in people with high level spinal cord injuries. Professor Gandevia answered questions about FES and its potential benefits. We look forward to the findings of the research in the future. |
