This website has been developed by the Office for Science and Medical Research, an agency of the New South Wales Government. It builds on the success of the Premier's Forum on Spinal Injury and Conditions held in Sydney in 2003.

The free, two day forum attracted world renowned scientists, researchers, clinicians and physicians as well as hundreds of Australians living with spinal cord injury and conditions, their carers and families. Special guest at the conference was actor, director and author, the late Christopher Reeve.

At the forum, the NSW Premier Bob Carr announced that the NSW Government will spend $35.9 million on research and extra services for people with physical disabilities. During the Premier's keynote speech he announced:

  • $10.9 million over four years to establish the Spinal Cord Injury and Conditions Fund to promote biomedical research into spinal injury, disorders and neurological conditions;
  • $23 million over four years for an extra 100 attendant care places within a year to help people with physical disability do everyday tasks such as get out of bed, shower and get dressed.
  • $2 million for a two year pilot program to improve coordination of services for people who have suffered catastrophic injuries that would concentrate on the move from rehabilitation centres back into the community.
